The Boqueria market is the first of the municipal markets of Barcelona, and was inaugurated in 1840, on March 19, the day of San José. After four years of work it was located on land previously occupied by the convent of Sant Josep. In 1836, the Marquis de Campo Sagrado, captain general of Catalonia, decided to regulate the traveling market that was installed in the main square which was in what had been the convent.
